چکیده

We use an optically dense anisotropic magneto-optical trap to study recoil-induced resonances RIRs in the transient high-gain regime. We find that two distinct mechanisms govern the atomic dynamics: the finite, frequency-dependent atomic response time and momentum-space population redistribution. At low input probe intensities, the residual Doppler width of the atoms, combined with the finite atomic response time, result in a linear transient hysteretic effect that modifies the locations, widths, and magnitudes of the resulting gain spectra depending on the sign of the scan chirp. When larger intensities i.e., greater than a few W /cm2 are incident on the atomic sample for several s, hole burning in the atomic sample momentum distribution leads to a coherent population redistribution that persists for approximately 100 s. We propose using RIRs to engineer the atomic momentum distribution to enhance the nonlinear atom-photon coupling. We present a numerical model and compare the calculated and experimental results to verify our interpretation.

Population Dynamics in Coherent Excitation of Cold Atoms

A summary of the entire scope of the Kansas State University AMO program is contained in the J. R. Macdonald Laboratory abstract. The present document is limited to a discussion of recent progress in the MOTRIMS projects. MOTRIMS, or magneto optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy, is a methodology originally developed for the study of ion-atom or photon-atom collisions. Following the bas...

Recoil-Ion and Electron Momentum Spectroscopy: Reaction-Microscopes

Recoil-ion and electron momentum spectroscopy is a rapidly developing technique that allows one to measure the vector momenta of several ions and electrons resulting from atomic or molecular fragmentation. In a unique combination, large solid angles close to π 4 and superior momentum resolutions around a few percent of an atomic unit ( . .u a ) are typically reached in state-of-the art machines...

Observation of lasing mediated by collective atomic recoil.

We observe the buildup of a frequency-shifted reverse light field in a unidirectionally pumped high-Q optical ring cavity serving as a dipole trap for cold atoms. This effect is enhanced and a steady state is reached, if via an optical molasses an additional friction force is applied to the atoms. We observe the displacement of the atoms accelerated by momentum transfer in the backscattering pr...

Double-electron transfer with an ultra-cold atom target as a preparation for experiments at HITRAP

We have set up an ultra-cold target of rubidium atoms combined with a recoil ion momentum spectrometer for kinematically complete scattering experiments at the GSIHITRAP facility. First experiments will focus on multiple electron-transfer reactions in collisions of highly charged ions with many-electron atoms such as U + Rb. In particular, we want to investigate correlation effects in multielec...
